The pawn shop felt like a tomb. Ethan, his spirit crushed, found himself standing before the showcase, his reflection gaunt and weary. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed, amplifying the silence that had taken up residence in his heart.

He saw it. His grandmother's ring. He felt nothing, an absence where joy, sorrow, everything, used to be. The pawnbroker’s voice was a flat monotone. Ethan’s gaze drifted to the floor, and he felt a wave of nausea wash over him.
