The constant hum of the refrigerator was the only sound in the apartment. Maria hadn’t left the house in three days. Her reflection in the darkened window showed a gaunt face, eyes that were devoid of any spark. The apartment was a mess, like her life. She couldn't bring herself to clean. What was the point?

Her phone buzzed. Her mother, checking up on her. She ignored it. She couldn't face her family, not yet. Not when she felt like this. She’d always prided herself on her independence. Now, she was nothing more than a failure.

She picked up the remote, flipping through channels without watching. She was just floating, adrift in an ocean of numbness. She was starting to feel heavy.
