"This is how you handle the angry clients," she said, her voice monotone. The woman, Jessica, scribbled furiously in a notebook, her face alight with an almost frightening enthusiasm. It had once been a source of pride, the ability to soothe the upset and to resolve their issues. Now, it was just another chore.

She showed Jessica the templates for composing the emails, the scripts, the soothing phrases. She felt a peculiar, sinking feeling as Jessica flawlessly recited the scripted apology. The knowledge of her own redundant usefulness seemed to intensify with each passing minute.

That evening, she found herself walking aimlessly in the park, the evening light painting the sky.
