“Explain this, Mr. Jones.” The sternness in the Dean’s voice was like a physical blow. The accusations of plagiarism landed on Michael like a landslide. His carefully constructed facade of competence crumbled.

He spent the rest of the day aimlessly wandering the campus, his steps slow and heavy. The laughter of other students grated on his nerves. He found himself avoiding his friends, unable to meet their eyes.

He ended up at the river, staring at the murky water. He felt an overwhelming urge to just disappear into its depths. The thought was strangely comforting.
