Rain lashed against the windows as she surveyed the empty lab. The equipment, once humming with activity under Professor Anya’s watchful eye, now sat dormant, gathering dust. The space felt cold, sterile. The absence of Anya's presence was a physical weight, pressing down on her.

She traced a finger along the cold steel of a microscope, remembering the countless hours they’d spent side-by-side, poring over slides, discussing theories, dreaming of breakthroughs. A chill ran through her, despite the warmth of the room. The chair she had sat in while Anya gave her advice felt empty. It was hard to breathe.

She found herself re-reading the email, the terse announcement of Anya’s retirement. No mention of their shared research, no acknowledgement of their partnership, nothing beyond the impersonal formality. Her lower lip trembled.
