The apartment felt cavernous. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, making the emptiness even more pronounced. He hadn't bothered to tidy up since the news. The half-eaten takeout containers, the overflowing ashtray, the unwashed dishes—they were a testament to the stagnation that had taken root.

He sat on the couch, staring at the empty space where his mentor’s favorite armchair used to be. Every piece of furniture felt like a silent judge, accusing him of failure. His mind replayed the last conversation he'd had with him, a casual exchange, nothing hinting at the impending departure. He felt a tightening in his chest.

He got up abruptly and started pacing. He felt a sharp pang of anger, quickly followed by a crushing sadness. His legs began to feel heavy, as if made of lead. He collapsed back on the couch, the silence amplifying the deafening roar in his ears.
