The news arrived via text. "Nailed it!" Sam wrote. Across the room, Lily slumped, her shoulders caving in. She had poured her heart into the interview. Now, for nothing.

She retreated to her desk, the glow of the computer screen mocking her. The constant hum of the office felt like an intrusion, a soundtrack to her defeat. The air in her lungs felt thin, insufficient.

She stared at the wall, seeing nothing but a vast, empty expanse. The job was gone, but so much more seemed to be slipping away with it. The joy she once felt in her work was now a distant memory.

She closed her eyes, the world going gray. She wanted to be anywhere but here, anywhere but herself.
