The chatter and laughter of the guests echoed in his ears as Thomas found himself by the entrance. He felt a growing sense of detachment, an overwhelming feeling of inadequacy. The bright, cheerful atmosphere of the wedding only amplified his unease.

Then he saw her. Across the room, Chloe was laughing, surrounded by friends. She looked happy, content. He was immediately struck by the contrast between her joy and his internal struggles. His cheeks felt hot.

He abruptly turned and headed back to the car, seeking refuge in the familiar confines of his vehicle. He wanted to shut out the world.
