The chipped paint on the wall seemed to mock David's efforts to hang the picture frame. He’d spent hours struggling with it, the nails bending, the plaster crumbling. He saw Mark, the "venture capitalist," striding across the street, a confident grin plastered on his face. The reality – a low-level accountant at a local firm – was a punch to the gut. David felt a familiar ache, a hollowness that echoed the emptiness of his own achievements. He chucked the frame onto the floor, the glass shattering. He didn't even bother to clean it up.
