Eliza found herself staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, scrutinizing every wrinkle, every imperfection. Across the hall, she could hear the party going on, the laughter and chatter of her friends. Liam, the "successful CEO," was holding court, regaling everyone with stories. The truth, revealed by a mutual friend, about his role as a shop assistant, had knocked the wind out of Eliza's sails. She felt like a shadow, invisible. She splashed cold water on her face, but the numbness wouldn't go away.
