The rain hammered against the roof, each drop a relentless drumbeat against Liam's already fragile composure. He sat hunched in the armchair, the shadows deepening the lines etched into his face. The constant weight in his chest intensified as he remembered the calls, the clipped conversations that ended abruptly when he entered the room. He felt small.

He felt himself withdrawing. He was used to her leaving now. She had become someone else. He was no longer the center of her world. He was an afterthought. He found himself avoiding her gaze. He had little to say.
