He saw the notification, from Gary Peterson, and he wanted to scream. Charles was staring at the blank screen of his laptop, the cursor blinking mockingly. He'd lost all interest in his passion, his writing. The words wouldn’t come. He couldn't even manage to check his emails.

His life had become a series of missed opportunities and broken promises. The apartment felt suffocating, the air thick with a sense of hopelessness. He felt like a failure, a ghost haunting his own life. The walls seemed to be closing in.

He took a shaky breath, the request a stark reminder of his past and his perceived inadequacy. He closed his eyes.
