The scent of freshly baked bread filled the apartment, a smell that transported her back to her grandmother's kitchen. She found him in the kitchen, meticulously following a recipe written in her native tongue.

The effort, the dedication, it was almost painful to witness. She hadn’t put any effort into anything, especially not into herself. The contrast was a heavy weight on her shoulders.

He turned, the smile faltering slightly as he saw her. He had a smudge of flour on his cheek, a sign of his effort. She felt her face flush, embarrassed by her lack of participation.

She mumbled an excuse and retreated to the bedroom.
