The scathing review, printed and pinned to the kitchen bulletin board, felt like a public shaming. "Overpriced and pretentious," the critic had written, "a monument to mediocrity." Chef Jean-Pierre, usually a pillar of confidence, found his knees weakening. He had invested every part of himself into the restaurant.
