Gemotions

The chipped paint on the apartment door seemed to mock Leo’s attempts to leave a good impression. He’d spent hours cleaning, making sure the place was immaculate. He’d even splurged on fresh flowers. The doorbell rang. He smoothed down his already-smooth hair, a nervous tic.

She walked in, smiling, her eyes lighting up the room. They had just shared an amazing night. “I’m so glad you’re here,” Leo stammered, his voice tight.

A phone chimed. His date glanced at it, and her smile faltered. Her eyes darted around, settling on a framed photograph of him with his family on the mantelpiece. She asked, quietly, “That’s… your sister, right?” Leo nodded, confused. The atmosphere had shifted.

The bell rang again. He went to answer it. There was a man there, and he looked confused. The women spoke, and the air around Leo became so thin that it was hard to breathe.
