The package arrived just as the rain started, a perfect misery. This time, it was addressed to "Mrs. Eleanor Davies." Liam knew she'd lived here years ago, before the renovations, before the silence. The weight of the world settled on him. He just wanted to disappear.

He dragged the box inside, the damp cardboard already starting to disintegrate. Inside, carefully wrapped in tissue paper, was a collection of cookbooks, splattered with what looked like sauce.

He looked at the books. Davies had obviously loved cooking. He had never made anything from scratch in his life. He left the box on the counter and grabbed a can of soup. He ate directly from the can.
