The realtor’s voice, crisp and professional, sliced through the air. “It’s a great location, potential is off the charts.” Mark stared blankly as he signed the papers. He didn’t care. He was utterly detached.

The house had been a weight, a reminder of the man he’d never become. He’d lived here, worked here, failed here. Every room, every corner, held the ghosts of his failures, of opportunities missed. He glanced around at his empty apartment, and then the emptiness that was his life.

The demolition was a welcome release, a final chapter. It was the only thing he had managed to get right. Now, he felt lighter than he had in years. Yet, the lightness was tainted by an unsettling hollowness.
