Gemotions

The persistent barking grated on her nerves. Another escape. Another trip across the yard to catch that overgrown puppy. David, she thought his name was. The dog was a playful menace, and his adventures always meant a delay to her already sluggish schedule. She felt a heavy weight on her shoulders, the feeling of perpetually disappointing everyone.

Her gaze drifted to the untended garden, weeds choking the few struggling plants. She had promised herself she would tend to it months ago. The broken swing set in the backyard mocked her inaction. What good was she?

She walked towards the fence, her steps slow and leaden. The dog was already halfway across the lawn, happily sniffing at the roses she had given up trying to cultivate. She grabbed the collar, a cold, indifferent touch.

“David, you silly dog,” she muttered, her voice devoid of emotion. As she led him back to his side of the fence, she saw the smiling face of the owner. His bright greeting was a direct contrast to the void she felt.
