The rejection letter from the literary agent was like a final nail in the coffin. Emily had poured her heart into her manuscript, hoping to replicate the success of her favorite author. Now, she was convinced that her work was garbage.

She crumpled the letter, tossing it on the growing pile of discarded drafts in her waste bin. She had to change apartments. She had to change almost everything.

She sank into the battered armchair, the springs groaning in protest. She stared at the ceiling, feeling an overwhelming sense of inertia. Writing, reading, breathing… it all felt exhausting.
