He sat on the worn steps of the old schoolhouse. The paint was peeling, just like the memories in his mind. He'd been looking for her for years. He’d seen her from across the street. He’d walked over, his heart pounding. "Remember when…?" He asked. Her response: a gentle smile and a blank look. He had tried to tell her about the time they'd hidden from the bully in the equipment closet. The only answer was a dismissive shrug. His words felt hollow in the empty playground. The sun beat down on his face, a cruel reminder of the warmth that had vanished.
