"Coffee?" Mark asked, his voice barely a whisper. The offer was left hanging in the air. He felt a disconnect, a distance from his colleagues. The news of the sale had settled into a heavy quiet in the office. He barely noticed anymore.

He found himself staring out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, blurring the world. He was tired of pretending. He felt like an extra in a film, insignificant and easily removed. He had stopped caring.

He’d stopped caring about everything. He considered calling in sick, just to escape the feeling of existing in the world. He felt as if everything he touched dissolved into ash.
