The biting wind whipped at Emily's face as she trudged down the desolate street. She clutched her phone, her fingers numb with cold. It vibrated. A text: “Hey, can you swing by the shop and handle the shipment? - Kevin.” Kevin was her younger brother, and the owner of the shop. She’d meant to text her mother about dinner.

A knot tightened in Emily's stomach. The words, so casually delivered, were a reminder of her situation. She felt a deep sense of despair. She was trapped in this life. The words rang in her ears, “You have failed.”

She wanted to scream, to run, to escape the suffocating weight of her current existence. She walked slower. The wind howled. Her shoulders slumped, and she felt utterly lost.
