Gemotions

The emergency light cast harsh shadows across the elevator car, highlighting the grime and imperfections. Richard looked at the ground. Three hours. His heart felt heavy in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. The feeling of dread was overwhelming.

“Anything happening on your end, Sarah?”

“No,” she responded, her voice flat. He avoided her gaze and stared intently at the floor. He felt a deep sense of inadequacy, as if he were constantly falling short, constantly disappointing.

He crossed his arms, hugging himself tightly, as if to protect himself from the storm of emotions swirling within him. He was tired of pretending, tired of the endless cycle of trying and failing.

He found himself wondering if anyone would even notice if he was gone.
