He’d spent the morning meticulously organizing his lab space, a futile attempt at control. The notice taped to the department bulletin board hit him like a physical blow. Dr. Chen, his guiding light, was accepting a fellowship at a prestigious institute. The news had been circulating, but he'd hoped, clung to the faintest possibility that it wasn't true.

The neatly arranged beakers and tubes seemed mocking now, a carefully constructed facade hiding the hollowness he felt. His hands trembled as he stared at the meticulous labeling on the chemicals, the work he'd dedicated the last two years to. It all felt like a charade, a performance for an audience that was now leaving.

He wandered into the break room, poured himself a coffee, and then tossed it in the trash, still full. He sat at the table, his elbows resting on the surface, his face buried in his hands. The silence of the room pressed in on him.
