He slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in the empty apartment. Dr. Lee, his guiding star, was gone. The shock of the email left him numb, incapable of emotion. The realization that he'd lost that guiding influence felt like a punch to the gut.

He sat on the floor, the cold seeping through his jeans. He hadn't eaten all day. He looked around at the clutter of his life, the unwashed dishes, the unfolded laundry, and felt an overwhelming sense of despair. He couldn't remember the last time he felt okay.

He stared at the blank wall, his mind a swirling vortex of anxieties. He was a small boat, cut adrift on a vast and unpredictable ocean. He thought about quitting and doing something, anything, else.
