He’d always been the one to plan things, to book the trips, to make the calls. Now, Liam found himself staring at the text message from Mark – "New job, moving to Seattle!" – with a leaden feeling in his chest.

The weight of it pressed down on him. He slumped against the worn couch, the springs digging uncomfortably into his back. The apartment felt too big, too quiet.

He thought of all the things they’d done, the future they'd envisioned together, and the future looked awfully blurry, like a bad photograph. Liam picked at a loose thread on the couch arm. It unravelled in his fingers, a small, insignificant thing. He felt a profound sense of uselessness.
