The neighbor’s giant, the one she loved, was gone. It had fallen right across the property line. It was now a mass of splintered wood. The crash had been deafening, a visceral reminder of nature’s power.

She watched, her face pale. She ought to feel something. Sadness, at least. But the emotion felt distant, like a forgotten memory.

She stood frozen, her hands at her sides. She felt a profound sense of emptiness, a hollowness that seemed to echo in the sudden silence. She took a step back, turned, and went back inside, pulling the curtains shut.
