The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the chill within her bones remained. Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the tempest brewing inside. She hadn't left her apartment in days, the unopened mail piling up like a monument to her inaction. Then, a crisp white envelope, stark against the drabness, appeared. Years. Years since… she traced the unfamiliar handwriting. Her stomach twisted, a familiar ache.

Inside, a single page, the paper thin and brittle with age. *“I am profoundly sorry, Amelia. I understand the pain I caused…”* The words blurred before her eyes. Shame clawed at her throat, making it difficult to breathe. The apology, decades overdue, felt less like absolution and more like another stone added to the weight that had settled on her. She crumpled the letter, the paper crackling like a dying ember.

She pushed herself away from the table, a sudden and urgent need to move overcoming her. The empty apartment felt stifling. The dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight that had managed to penetrate the gloom. She needed to be somewhere – anywhere – else.
