The ad was a cruel joke. Pictures of the house, bathed in golden afternoon light, mocked Elara. It had been decades, yet the memories felt fresh, particularly the ones of her, a child, standing on the porch steps, tears streaming, as her father yelled from the car. The listing described a "charming craftsman," a "perfect family home." She slumped further into her threadbare armchair, the laptop screen reflecting her tired face. Even her cat, usually a constant companion, seemed to avoid her gaze, preferring the sunbeam on the floor.

She reached for the half-eaten pint of ice cream, the spoon clattering against the plastic tub. Each scoop was a futile attempt to fill the hollow ache in her chest.
