The online listing felt like a punch to the gut. The house, once a safe haven, now felt like a relic of a life she couldn't replicate. "Spacious bedrooms," the ad boasted. "Perfect for a growing family." A bitter laugh escaped her lips, a sound of disbelief. She’d always wanted a family, a home filled with laughter, but her life had been a series of missed connections, a succession of empty rooms.

She pushed back from her desk, the chair scraping against the floor. The apartment felt suffocating, the walls closing in. She glanced at the calendar, a depressing reminder of deadlines, appointments, and obligations she couldn't bring herself to face.

She walked into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water, the liquid sloshing over the side of the glass. The dampness against her hand was a cold, unwelcome comfort.
