The basement was a labyrinth of shadows, a place she hadn't dared to enter since the news. The detective’s words echoed, “They found the body here.” She should have inspected the house more carefully. Now, her appetite had vanished, and sleep was a battle against nightmares. She found herself sitting for hours, staring out the back door, watching the shadows lengthen across the neglected garden. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves against the window, sent a jolt of terror through her. She felt like a prisoner in her own house.
