The vibrant colors of the list, penned by his mother, clashed with the muted tones of his existence. "See a Broadway show." He hadn't left his apartment in a week. He couldn’t even summon the energy to turn on the television.

He scrolled through his phone, a wasteland of unread messages and unanswered calls. He’d become a ghost, a shadow of the person he once was. He stared at his reflection in the darkened screen, a stranger.

His throat constricted. "Adopt a dog." How could he possibly care for another living thing? He couldn’t even care for himself. He threw the phone onto the bed, the plastic clattering against the mattress.
