Sarah slumped onto the curb, the weight of the grocery bags feeling insurmountable. Every muscle ached, every breath felt like a monumental effort. Her shoulders slumped, dragging her body toward the pavement. She glanced across the street, at Mr. Henderson's mansion. The manicured lawn, the gleaming windows, the sheer size of the place… it all felt like a deliberate insult. He was always off somewhere, flying on holidays, or at galas.

She hated the way his car sat, blocking the street. It was a brand new sports car. She watched him, as he got out of the car, with an effortless smile and a wave. He seemed so happy. She’d spent her last $20 on bread and milk. Her stomach rumbled. The thought of even a cheap meal felt so far out of reach. She could only imagine the feasts he had.
