The hum of the washing machine was a constant background noise, a dreary soundtrack to her existence. As the spin cycle finished, Linda gazed out the window at the new pool her neighbor, Mr. Harrison, had just installed. She’d been saving for years, and she couldn't afford a new washing machine. The pool, like the new car, like the trips to exotic locations he took with his family... everything felt like a taunt.
