Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the bleakness inside Elias. He hadn't bothered to eat all day, just sat on the threadbare couch, the remote a useless weight in his hand. He’d flipped through channels, each one a testament to his own inactivity. Then, a glint of metal caught his eye. The shovel, leaning forgotten in the corner. He hadn't touched it in years, but he dragged it outside anyway, the chill air biting into him. The ground in the overgrown backyard was hard-packed. He dug, mechanically, without any real purpose. After an hour, the shovel struck something. A rusted metal box emerged from the soil. He pried it open, revealing a collection of childish drawings and a letter, dated decades ago, addressed to…himself. His younger self. The handwriting looked vaguely familiar, a ghost of a hand he barely recognized. He read the letter, his mouth dry. It spoke of hopes, dreams, a future filled with vibrant possibilities.
