The email inbox was empty, again. Another day without a response, without even a flicker of interest in his resume. He sighed, the sound lost in the stale air of the apartment. A knock at the door, another unwelcome interruption.

It was Ms. Rodriguez, her face alight with an enthusiasm he couldn't comprehend. She clutched a gardening magazine. "Hi! I was thinking, maybe I could use a corner of your yard for a little community garden? I’m envisioning tomatoes, maybe some zucchini."

He stared at his worn jeans, avoiding her gaze. He should say no. It felt like too much effort. He just wanted the door to close, to return to the nothingness.
