He knew it was a big moment in his life when he wrote the essay. Now, the words were displayed in a book as an example. He sat on the park bench, watching the children play, and felt a profound sense of distance, of separation from himself and his past. He felt like the one who got away.

He had hoped that he'd become something great, not this. He had made so many promises to himself. It felt like all of his potential had dissolved into nothing.

He stood up, brushed off his pants, and walked away, the park a place of torment now.
