Gemotions

"Mom, can I borrow that old shoebox from the closet?" Maya called out, trying to sound casual, but her voice cracked on the final word. Her mother's response, a cheerful "Of course, honey!", did little to soothe the tightness in her stomach.

She found the shoebox. It was overflowing with things. As she sifted through them, she realized they were all hers. Report cards, tests, even the spelling lists from elementary school. It was as if her entire academic career had been preserved in meticulous detail.

A chill ran down her spine. Each item felt like a tiny accusation, each perfectly preserved assignment a symbol of a past she thought she had left behind. She picked up a drawing of a cat, its whiskers crooked, and a feeling of disorientation slammed into her. The familiar closet started to close in, and she felt suffocated.
