He was alone in the den. The box on the floor was the last thing he expected to see. Inside, every paper he'd ever written, every test he'd taken, every project he'd turned in, carefully preserved by his mother.

A wave of nausea churned in his stomach. The room felt suddenly small, the walls closing in. He felt a creeping sensation of vulnerability, as if he were being watched. He took a step back, his heart pounding in his chest.

He needed to get away, to disappear. He turned and fled, leaving the box and its secrets behind.
