Gemotions

The phone rang, jolting him from his reverie. He knew who it was before he even answered. The caller ID displayed the name of the reunion committee. His hand trembled as he answered the call.

"Just checking in," the voice on the other end chirped. "Have you decided if you'll be attending the reunion?" He closed his eyes, the question a physical blow. He felt the weight of the past pressing down on him.

He stammered a vague response, avoiding a direct answer. He could hear the polite, professional tone of the caller, the underlying pressure to attend. He was already rehearsing his excuses, the elaborate lies that would allow him to stay away. The conversation ended. He hung up the phone. He was glad to be alone again.
