Gemotions

The invitation was tucked inside a beautifully printed holiday card from his sister. He opened it last, hoping to savor the anticipation. Instead, he felt a sudden chill as he unfolded the card and saw the high school logo. He dropped the card on the table, a wave of nausea washing over him.

He felt the familiar pressure in his chest, the feeling of being suffocated by the past. He imagined the scrutiny, the comparisons, the inevitable reminders of his perceived failures. The thought sent a jolt of panic through his veins. He stood up abruptly and started pacing.

He went to the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face, trying to calm the racing of his pulse. He looked at his reflection, a stranger staring back. He knew he wouldn't go. He just knew it.
