Gemotions

The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows on the walls of the small, secluded cottage. Clara clutched the faded photographs, her knuckles white. The pictures depicted her parents, always portrayed as pillars of respectability and community involvement, in a series of compromising situations: holding hands with other people, laughing in a way she'd never witnessed.

Her lips pressed into a thin line. She traced the lines of the photographs with her fingertips, the paper feeling flimsy and fragile. The comfortable reality she had always known felt precarious, like a house of cards about to topple.

She quickly put the photos away and abruptly rose from the table, turning away from the dim glow of the fireplace. She felt an urgent need to escape the confines of the room, to flee the weight of the unsettling secrets.
