I heard the whispers first, a low murmur that swept through the office like a contagion. Then, the official email. I reread the sentence, the one about the acquisition, a dozen times, but each time, the implications felt more devastating.

I felt a sudden chill, as if the air conditioning had been turned up too high. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to ward off the cold. The familiar rhythm of the office, the sounds of typing and phone calls, suddenly grated on my nerves.

I could feel my heart pounding against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. My breathing became shallow, rapid. The thought of losing my job, of starting over, filled me with dread. My future was uncertain.
