Gemotions

The musty scent of the old house clung to Elara’s skin as she crept through the shadowed hallway. Her brother, Leo, had been ecstatic, practically vibrating with excitement at the news of their grandfather’s will. She, on the other hand, felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. The lawyer had said “two distinct parcels,” and the ambiguity had been eating at her. Each footstep echoed eerily in the silence.

She reached the library, the heavy oak door looming like a judgmental eye. Inside, Leo was already perched on a dusty armchair, a thick tome open in his lap. He gestured towards a small, ornate box sitting on the mahogany desk. "Look what I found, El! It's incredible!"

Elara slowly approached. The air in the room felt thick, heavy, as though pressing down on her chest. She couldn't breathe properly. The carvings on the box depicted scenes she didn’t recognize, and she felt a prickle of discomfort crawl up her spine.
