The hum of the mainframe filled the room, a constant, low drone that seemed to amplify the pounding in Alex's head. The data was irrefutable. Both of them had been working on the same project. He looked back at his work. The code. The algorithms. It was all there.

He sat back in his chair, feeling like the world was spinning. He had to face his mentor. He did not want to. He had been preparing for this day for weeks, but now that it was here, he was terrified. He tried to think.

He had no idea what to say. His carefully constructed plans seemed to have disintegrated into dust. He closed his eyes, desperately willing the feeling to pass. He knew it wouldn't. He slowly rose and walked towards his mentor’s office, his feet dragging.
