The courtroom felt cold, sterile. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to buzz louder than usual. Sarah gripped the edge of the witness stand, her knuckles white. This was it. The culmination of months of work. And then, the other person’s project, exactly the same.

She glanced at her opponent, Mark. He met her gaze, his expression unreadable. She felt a shiver crawl down her spine. The lawyer was speaking, the words washing over her. She knew this was a mistake.

The room was closing in. Her breathing quickened. She struggled to keep herself together. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. She closed her eyes, trying to force the feeling to subside. She opened her eyes again, and knew.
