The bank statement felt like it was burning a hole in Amelia’s hand. Her fingers tightened, crumpling the paper slightly. She couldn't breathe properly. Why did he need this much money stashed away? Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate to escape. She found him in the garden, whistling as he pruned the roses, oblivious. She wanted to run, to scream, to ask a million questions, but her feet were lead.

"David," she managed, her voice a thin thread. He turned, a cheerful smile lighting his face. She pushed the statement at him, watching him read, his jovial expression slowly dissolving. The quiet that followed was a deafening roar in her ears.
