The ocean's roar seemed to mock her, a constant reminder of the vastness of the world, and her own insignificance. She stood on the cliffside, the wind whipping her hair around her face. The research proposal had arrived in her inbox. Identical.

She thought of the years she had spent working on it, the late nights, the sacrifices. All of it, rendered… meaningless. She bit down on her lip, a sharp, stinging sensation. The salty spray stung her face.

The world tilted. She took a step back from the edge. The ground felt unsteady beneath her feet. She began to cry, the tears mingling with the ocean spray, blurring her vision, unable to find comfort from the sun.
