Gemotions

The envelope felt wrong in her hand, the paper cheap, the contents shocking. She retreated into the guest room, the door slamming shut with a sharp crack that echoed the sudden pain in her chest. She sank onto the bed, her breath coming in shallow gasps. This couldn't be happening.

She walked into the living room, and saw him sitting on the couch, watching the news. He looked so ordinary. The television flickered, casting shifting shadows on the walls, and the room seemed to shrink around her. She didn't trust her voice, so she handed him the letter. Her eyes were fixed on his face, waiting.
