The numbers swam before her eyes. Tens of thousands of dollars. Where had it come from? What was it for? She gripped the kitchen counter, her knuckles white, her body trembling. The world tilted precariously. She had to get out, she needed air, she couldn't stay here.

She found him in the garage, tinkering with his car. He looked up, his face a mask of concern. "What's wrong, honey?" he asked. The question hung in the air, heavy and loaded. She should tell him, confront him, but the words wouldn't come. She swallowed, trying to force the lump in her throat to disappear.
